ECC Agar

For the detection and enumeration of blue-coloured E. coli and red-coloured Coliforms.

DIRECTIONS
Prepare 1000 ml of distilled or demineralised water for a 100 test dose.
Suspend powdered medium in the water, stir to mix and allow to swell.
Bring gently to the boil, stirring until completely dissolved.

PROCEDURE
Homogenise sample if required. Inoculate 1 ml into 10 ml of ECC Agar CHROMagar®.
Incubate at 37°C/24 h.
Count the caracteristic colonies:
• Red colonies: Coliforms
• Blue colonies: E. coli
HUMEAU Suggestion
Incubate at 44°C/24 h.
Count the caracteristic colonies:
• Blue colonies: E. coli
• Red + blue colonies=
total faecal Coliforms

INNOVATIVE
The ECC Agar is an innovative culture medium designed by A. Rambach for the detection of blue-appearing E. coli and red-appearing Coliforms thanks to a specific marker. The rest of Gram-negative bacteria grow as colourless colonies.
